Baby alerts parents to flood
posted by admin in Window CleaningBut when their seven-week-old baby Kobe cried at 3.45am on Friday, they got up and found every room, except a small spare bedroom, in their Whangaparaoa house flooded.
“We’re lucky he woke us up when he did,” says Mrs Marriott.
“We put him to bed at midnight, and we didn’t hear the rain at all - we’re pretty deep sleepers.”
The water came off Whangaparaoa Rd, down the driveway that is shared with about four other houses, and into their house at the end.
“Our neighbours weren’t affected,” she says. “It came in through the front door and a ranch-slider.”
The Marriotts had recently turned half their double garage into two single bedrooms, which had the most damage, with carpet having to be ripped up.
“We’re lucky we’ve had no structural damage. But we had an oriental rug on the lounge floor which has leaked dye onto the carpet.
“We’ve tried treating it but we may have to replace it,” Mrs Marriott says.
“Sometimes you don’t notice all the damage until it dries out. The wood inside our front door has bowed.”
They also have no water, as the viewing hole for their underground water tank filled with silt and mud.
“All our water is brown, We thought it would clear up but it still hasn’t,” says Mrs Marriott.
“We are still sleeping in our bedroom but we have blowers going all day, with all the windows open. We’re probably going to move to a friend?s house while they are away.”
She says her neighbours, who have lived next door for 20 years, have never seen flooding like it.
Jae Services have provided the Marriotts with blowers and dehumidifiers to dry out remaining carpet.
Mrs Marriott says the carpet cleaning businesses have been inundated with calls.
Jae Services Rodney manager Steve Cullen says the Hibiscus Coast has been the worst hit this time.
“We’re getting equipment from all over Auckland to cover the area. We just received a container load of equipment in - it was on route when the storm hit.”
He says the last time they were this busy was during the July 10 storm, but that was mainly in Warkworth and Snells Beach.
Another Stanmore Bay home was also affected by flooding. Roads closed because of flooding include Waybe Valley Rd, Waitietie Rd and Tomarata Valley Rd near Wellsford, and Falls Rd in Warkworth, the Rodney District Council says.
State Highway 16 was barely passable near West Coast Rd on Friday morning.
Rodney Civil Defence was also alerted Thursday to the possible risk of a tsunami following a huge earthquake in Peru, but was told no threat to New Zealand had eventuated.
