The need for perfect lawns produces a heavy burden of air pollution, pesticide and chemical fertilizer runoff and pointless misuse of good agricultural land, suggests a new report from Statistics Canada.Discarding a gas-powered mower, for example, pays big air-pollution dividends.

And if you go all the way, perhaps replacing an expanse of grass with a mix of flowers and perennial ground cover, it can be a rare act of ecological stewardship that actually saves you money and effort.

No trading up to a costly hybrid car. No sorting the recycled cans from the bottles. Instead, a chance to kick back and relax instead of wasting precious weekend hours grooming and feeding the lawn.
