The South Berwick District voted Monday night to increase the cost of new connections to its system from $2,500 to $3,000. The increase will not affect lots that are currently connected to the system.

The trustees voted 5-0 for the increase, saying it was necessary due to the rising cost of operations and depreciation of equipment at the district’s septic treatment plant on Liberty Street.

There were two new connections to the district’s system last year, according to district office manager Bonnie Bishop, though that number could rise as more apartments and multi-family homes are added or converted in the future.

“A lot of lots are being developed into multifamily homes (in town),” District administrative assistant Tom Harmon said.

About half of all South Berwick residents are connected to the district’s system, while the other half own private systems, Harmon said.
