It’s unusual to issue public health warnings about pests which aren’t technically a health hazard. Bed bugs don’t spread disease or cause serious medical problems, although they are annoying and upsetting, Barton said.

But bed bug complaints are increasing so quickly, especially during the last year, local health officials want people to know both how to guard against and how to get get rid of infestations.

Complaints are mostly from people in apartments who want health advice about the bugs and help convincing landlords to pay pest control experts to eliminate infestations. Health officlals have provided residents and landlords with information about dealing with the parasites, but can’t order them to do so.

London-based pest control expert Bruno Levesque confirmed bed bugs are rebounding in Ontario at an astounding rate after a 50-year hiatus. That’s both because more and more international travellers are bringing them home in suitcases and because “integrated pest management” techniques in recent years specifically target ants, cockroaches and other pests which feed on filth while leaving the blood-loving bed bugs to thrive in relatively clean environments.
