The family of an elderly dementia patient who was raped by a carer in her nursing home say they are appalled that her attacker has been sentenced to serve only six months in jail.

Thirty-six-year-old Henry Alexander was found guilty of raping the 85-year-old woman while he was washing her at her Mount Eliza nursing home in 2005.

In court today Alexander was sentenced to three years, but two-and-a-half years of the sentence were suspended, meaning he will serve just six months behind bars.

In sentencing Alexander, Bourke said the offence was a serious breach of trust of a most vulnerable woman.

But he said he believed it was a spontaneous event and Alexander was otherwise of good character.

He said the penalty would seem light to many people, but it would be unjust to give Alexander more jail time.

He said Alexander was a devoted father to his two children and did not suffer from a psychosexual disorder.

Outside court a for the victim said the sentence was grossly inadequate and sent the wrong message to the .

Representatives of the victim’s family said they were “appalled”.
