Sen. Hillary Clinton came on the air at 9:45 p.m. and wasted no time before setting about the task the pundits expected her to take on: Spreading salve on the rift in the Democratic Party.

Reporters at the Democratic National Convention have brought back plenty of stories about how Clinton’s supporters during her campaign were still wearing her buttons, raising her banners and singing her praises. Talk of a roll-call vote and putting her name into nomination was being discussed up till the broadcast of the convention Tuesday night.

, aimed straight at the division:

“I’m here today as a proud mother, a proud Democrat, a proud senator from New York, a proud American and proud supporter of Barack Obama….The time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose.”

“This is a fight for the future and it’s a fight we must win together.”

“Barack Obama is my candidate and he must be our president.”

Are those words — and the rest of her speech — the words the party needed to hear? Will they bring the party together? Will it matter? And if you’re not a Democrat, what’s your view at the end of the night? Did she do any damage to the campaign of Sen. John McCain, who gets his party’s nomination next week?
