Angola’s Home Affairs minister, Roberto Leal Monteiro “Ngongo”, Saturday in Luanda called on chiefs of the Southern African Police to outline efficient mechanisms of fight against crime, aiming the stability of the region.

The Government official was speaking at the opening session of the third meeting of police officials of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Council Organisation (SARPCCO) that will analyse issues related to the organism.

According to Roberto Leal Monteiro, the fight against crime is a key factor to guarantee peace, security and stability.

He said that “a multilateral approach, independent from each member state, should constitute a compulsory standard in this kind of event”.

The Home Minister affirmed that crime prevention implies the establishment of efficient mechanisms of coordination and permanent exchange of information and constitutes an important condition for the success of SADC police chiefs committee.

Roberto Leal Monteiro “Ngongo” also called for the upholding of harmonisation procedures concerning the observance of respect of fundamental rights and freedom of people.

According to the Cabinet minister, such scenery only became possible due to the contribution and solidarity expressed by various regional police organisations, through joint actions.

About the elections in Angola, scheduled for next September, the Home Minister said that he is convinced that such event will take place in a healthy climate of peace prevailing in the country.

SARPCCO was founded in August 5th, 1995, by eleven member countries of the Southern African Development Community, namely Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Mauritius, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
