In a murderous assault inside a reform home for juvenile offenders in the city, a 14-year-old boy died after he was beaten up by Home fellow inmates.

The boy, Mubarak Ali, had run away from his uncle’s house in Erisarampatti village near Pollachi last Friday. The police picked him up on “suspicion” while he was roaming about in the busy Gandhipuram area here. He was presented before the child welfare committee, which handed him over to the observation home.

One of the oldest homes in the country, the home was started in 1921 by a non governmental organisation, Discharged Prisoners Aid Society, and is headed by the Home district collector. Now it houses as many as 46 inmates, of which many are juveniles convicted for criminal offences.

Barely two days after his arrival in the home, Mubarak was assaulted on Tuesday by a group of 10 boys, who are said to have records of grave offences. Mubarak suffered multiple internal injuries, but did not complain to the teacher at the observation home as his assaulters had warned him of dire consequences.

For nearly four hours, he silently suffered the agony. But during lunch time, he began to vomit profusely. It was only then that Mubarak told his teacher, Latha, that he had been assaulted. A civil surgeon attached to the home was immediately called in, but there was no improvement in the boy’s condition, said an official of the home.

Mubarak was then admitted, with severe “chest contusions,” to the Coimbatore general hospital at 6 pm on Tuesday and was Home declared dead on Wednesday morning. A RDO enquiry has been instituted into the killing.
