Infants exposed to BBP (n-butyl benzyl phthalate) may have an increased susceptibility to breast cancer. BBP is a “plasticizer” that increases the fluidity of substances, and is used in pipes, vinyl floor tiles, carpet-backing, and other household items.

Researchers fed BBP to lactating rats, and their offspring absorbed the chemical in breast milk. The amount of BBP the baby rats ingested was equivalent to the safe dose limit for humans established by the EPA.

BBP exposure increased the proliferation of cells in lobules and other breast tissue compartments, and increased the expression of genes related to cell proliferation, differentiation, communication, and signal transduction. All of this could raise risks for breast cancer later in life.
