Alzheimer’s researchers have long touted fish oil as a possible means of delaying or preventing the debilitating disease. Now, UCLA scientists have confirmed that fish oil is a deterrent against Alzheimer’s, and identified the reasons why.

The omega-3 fat docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil increases the production of the protein LR11. LR11 is found at reduced levels in Alzheimer’s patients, and is known to destroy the beta amyloid plaques associated with the disease. These plaques are toxic to the brain, and lead to Alzheimer’s.

The national Alzheimer’s Association that 5.1 million Americans are currently afflicted with Alzheimer’s, a number that may increase to as many as 16 million people by the year 2050.
