Italian children are getting fatter as they switch from a Mediterranean diet, rich in fruit and vegetables, to high-calorie snacks and beverages.

experts often hold up southern European diets, such as Italy’s, as examples of good nutrition. But in Italy, more than 30 percent of children aged 7-11 are obese or overweight.

About 57,000 people die of diseases related to obesity every year in Italy, or 10 percent of all deaths.
