Contrary to expectations, a higher percentage of body fat at menopause means a greater of experiencing symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. It was previously thought that these so-called “vasomotor symptoms” were less common in heavier women, because body fat can convert male hormones into estrogen.

But a study of more than 1,700 women showed that as body fat increased, so did the of hot flashes and night sweats.

One possible reason is that excess fat makes it more difficult for the body to dissipate heat.
