ConAgra, which manufactures more than half of America’s microwave popcorn, has removed the controversial chemical diacetyl from its ingredients list. Diacetyl gives popcorn a buttery, creamy taste, but workers exposed to the airborne chemical came down with a rare lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans.

ConAgra began removing diacetyl from production lines in November, and is currently in the final stages of taking it out of all of its .

There are no specific safety regulations regarding diacetyl.

The nation’s second-largest producer, General Mills, removed diacetyl from its in October. The third-largest producer, American Pop Corn is in the process of reformulating its flavorings to remove diacetyl, a procedure they say is now “all but done”.
