The gifts all have been opened. The relatives have come and gone.

The yule log has all but flamed out.

Now comes the big cleanup.

The annual Bring One for the Chipper event offers plenty of places to get rid of that tree.

“With all the emphasis on eco-friendly options, if you haven’t already gone green, this may be a great opportunity to help your family experience a green Christmas,” said Kimberly King, of the Georgia Department of Affairs, sponsor of Keep Georgia Beautiful and the Chipper program.

More than 100 sites, including , will receive trees on Jan. 5. But some locations, such as the city of Holly Springs in Cherokee County, began receiving trees on Dec. 26.

The program has been going on since 1991 and has collected more than 5 million trees. Last year, more than 240,000 trees were disposed of, King said. Trees were turned into mulch to be used for playground landscaping, among other things.

On Jan. 5, state officials will be on hand at participating , handing out dogwood seedlings to the first 40,000 people who bring in trees, King said.

“Going to shop for the tree is a family tradition,” she said. “Perhaps disposing of the tree can become a family tradition as well.”
