If there’s an open manhole in the forest that nobody sees, is it really there?

We could wait until some curious child falls into it.

Take to Task is on the job, however, choosing the proactive approach and finding someone to get this problem fixed.

Ted Spitzler of Roswell was walking his dog in a wooded area behind his near the old property on Market when he discovered the manhole.

It’s part of the Roswell storm water drainage system and collects runoff from a nearby hill.

“Kids play back there,” Spitzler said. “One of them could fall in and hurt themselves.”

He looked around the area for the manhole cover, with the hopes of replacing it … but to no avail.

After a secondary search, Take to Task covered a 50-yard radius from the opening in an attempt to find the missing cover. No luck.

For the record, this manhole is very much off the beaten path. You’d have to go down a rolling hill from the eastside sidewalk on Market. And the manhole is jutting out of the hill atop a mound maybe 100 feet from the street.

But for a youngster seeking adventure, the lure of new dangerous depths to explore - with its roughly 20-foot drop and cascading storm water - is all too tempting.

A call to the Fulton County public works department revealed that the manhole was indeed the property of the city of Roswell.

But Roswell was closed for on Monday, New Year’s Eve, according to a recording on the public works line and the Roswell operator who answered the Police Department phone.

Take to Task did the responsible thing and reported the open manhole to the dispatch operator.

Only time will tell how quickly the county puts things right.

And hopefully no adventurous kids are hurt before then.

Take to Task will keep you posted.
