An open manhole in Roswell caught the attention of a resident out walking his pooch.
“Kids play back there,” said Ted Spitzler. “One of them could fall in and hurt themselves.”
Spitzler called us, and we called Fulton County, then the city of Roswell on New Year’s Eve.
The manhole, in a wooded area near the old Home Depot property on Market Boulevard, had no cover.
Not being able to reach Roswell authorities on the last day of the year, Take to Task reported the opening to the city’s emergency dispatcher.
The manhole cover wasn’t in Roswell’s inventory, however. The manhole was a sanitary sewer connected to the shuttered Home Depot building across the street, said Roswell’s water resources manager, Alice Champagne.
“We’re not sure why, but the sanitary sewer lid that was put on that manhole apparently was stolen,” Champagne said.
The city still responded to the need and potential danger.
First, they temporarily covered the hole with plywood, while a cover could be ordered. On Tuesday, the new manhole cover was fitted into place.
Champagne said they’ll contact Home Depot to address the issue.
