ATLANTA: Lost man has holiday reunion
An Ohio family had a happy holiday reunion thanks to the work of some Atlanta firefighters. An elderly man driving from Cincinnati to Charlotte to visit relatives several days before Christmas became disoriented and wound up in Atlanta late on Dec. 21, said Capt. Bill May of the Atlanta Fire-Rescue Dept. Recognizing that he was lost, the man followed a fire truck to Atlanta Fire-Rescue Station #2 on Jonesboro Road. Firefighters found that the man had no money on him but did have phone numbers in his wallet of family members in Ohio. The firefighters fed the man and let him sleep on the station’s sofa until a relative who drove all night from Cincinnati came to pick him up early the next morning. “He was able to say he’d been on the road for two days and was lost,” May said. “It was a happy ending to a potentially disastrous situation.”
Atlanta schools plan adjustments
Atlanta Public Schools officials are recommending a plan to relieve overcrowding at three elementary schools on the city’s north side, including building new classrooms and redrawing attendance zones.
Under the proposal, released late last month, Smith and Brandon elementary schools would get new buildings within the next two years and first-grade students while Jackson Elementary School’s current primary center would be expanded.
Some students at Jackson and Brandon also would be shuffled between the campuses to better balance enrollments, starting with the 2009-10 school year. No changes would be made to Smith’s attendance zones.
Information on the plan can be found at the school system’s Web site: http://www.atlanta.k12.ga.us/content/news/hottopics/Northside_Overcrowding.pdf.
