Murals and faux finishes jazz up home and add a personal touch
posted by admin in Home DepotGenuine leather, marble, suede give a luxurious feel to a room. For a fraction of the cost, faux painting techniques and mural art transform mundane rooms into creative and personalized spaces.
Using different textures, washes and colors adds depth and drama. A romantic mood may be achieved through a marble faux finish or a mural of a lively jungle scene may enliven a space.
“Houstonians are well traveled. Many channel their appreciation for the classic European looks — romantic and antiqued. Faux finishing creates a dramatic perception of value for less,” says Colleen O’Brien Pearland Leisure Learning Unlimited’s faux finishing instructor.
With the faux movement in home décor came a revival in the marketplace of tools, textures, specialty paints and products that allow for a more effortless process. Taking a course helps do-it-yourselfers sort through the terms and techniques, she says.
Her hands-on workshop introduces students to four techniques with advancing complexity.
“Faux courses give students the confidence they need to take on their in-home projects,” she says. “They can tackle shimmer stone, Venetian plaster, color wash and more.”
Taking on the in-home projects allows the homeowner to keep money in the bank. Contract rates for hiring a professional to create faux finishes depend on the complexity of design and the estimated time of completion, but generally range from about $55 to $75 an hour.
Lama Abukishk is a leisure artist who is hopeful of turning a talent into a business. With a degree in interior design, Abukishk hopes to continue her love for faux painting and take her passion into others’ homes.
As a child Abukishk watched her mother paint and has continued her mother’s legacy in her Sugar Land-area home with faux finishing techniques. During the day, she takes care of her children and helps oversee the family business — It’s a Grind Coffee House — but once the kids are in bed, she breaks out the paint.
“Faux painting is a major stress reliever for me. I love to paint. It’s in my blood,” she says. “I transform the elements of my home into art, and it is such a joy to see when I am finished.”
