Home Depot plans to open Valentine’s Day
posted by admin in Home DepotWork is progressing on the new Home Depot, which is scheduled to open on Feb. 14, 2008. The store will be located at the intersection of U. S. 41 N. and Charles Harvey Highway.
The date Feb. 14, 2008 will be memorable in more ways than one in Okeechobee. Not only is that date Valentine’s Day, it will be the long delayed grand opening date of the new Home Depot. Originally the building supply store, which will occupy the site at the intersection of Charles Harvey Boulevard and U. S. 441 S., was scheduled to open in August of last year. Then that date was moved to Jan. 17, 2008. Recently Home Depot spokesperson Demitra Wilson confirmed that the date has been moved again to Feb. 14.
The process of bringing the superstore to Okeechobee began back in September of 2006 when the Okeechobee County Planning Board/Board of Adjustments and Appeals granted Home Depot a special exception to build a retail building of more than 20,000 square feet.
Plans call for the building to take up a little over 100,000 square feet, which is about average for a Home Depot. The site will also contain an outdoor garden center of over 30,000 square feet. By comparison Wal-Mart contains about 200 square feet. The new Home Depot will employ somewhere between 80 to 150 people.
The total project area is listed as 721,353.6 square feet or 16.56 acres. It will be served by Okeechobee Utility Authority (OUA) for water and sewer. The sewer lift station on the southeast corner of the property that served the previous buildings will be utilized by Home Depot. However, the existing water main was not sufficient. Home Depot had to add a new water main connecting to the OUA water main on the west of U. S. 441 S. in front
Home Depot’s website states the store is the world’s largest home improvement specialty retailer with more than 2,200 retail stores in the U. S., Canada, Mexico and China.
