Home Depot opponents collect 1,000-plus signatures

Archwood Neighborhood Homeowners, a neighborhood group, cites concerns about traffic, noise, aesthetics, light pollution and too much competition for the area’s existing small, independent hardware and paint stores, and nurseries. The residents have circulated their petition around the community and online.
“While the idea of keeping sales-tax revenue in the county is appealing, Cameron Park homeowners doubt it will make up for the damage to their small community,” Steve Anderly, who is leading the petition drive, said in a news release.
Home Depot proposes to build on 33 acres off Highway 50 near Cambridge Road and Country Club Drive. The proposal calls for a 103,000-square-foot store plus a 35,000-square-foot garden center and another 123,000 square feet for other retailers.
Home Depot (NYSE: HD), the world’s largest home-improvement retailer with 2,170 stores, already has a store six miles west in Folsom and another 11 miles east in Placerville.
About 20 acres of the 33-acre site are zoned for professional office commercial, which would not allow a Home Depot. But the other 13 acres are zoned for planned commercial, a designation that would allow a large store, a county planning staff member has said.
