950 to lose jobs in Home Depot cutback
posted by admin in Home DepotHome Depot is closing three call centers next month under a continuing move to shift customer service responsibilities to the company’s warehouse stores.
The Atlanta-based retailer confirmed Tuesday it plans to lay off about 950 employees, including 750 at a large center in Tampa and 200 at smaller sites in Chicago and Dallas. The employees recently received notice that the centers will shut down Jan. 28, said spokesman Ron DeFeo.
The closings mark another round of cutbacks involving the back-office operations of Home Depot’s installation services. These three centers handled quotes and follow-up calls for customers who go into Home Depot stores and order window, door and flooring installations, DeFeo said.
The call centers were handling jobs that were already generated at the store level, DeFeo said. As we continue to work toward improving our customer experience, we thought it was important to restore that associate-customer contact. This gives the customer that one local contact for installation purchases.
Home Depot cut 550 jobs and closed a call center in Addison, Texas, in March, citing similar reasons.
DeFeo said the downturn in the housing market, which has cut into sales and profit at Home Depot and other home improvement retailers, was not a major culprit in the closings.
Home Depot has eight remaining call centers across the country. DeFeo said the company planned to keep them intact for now.
