The British Institute of Cleaning Science has been in existence for 46 years. For many years it was headquartered in London but in the late 1980s moved to Northampton sometimes referred to as The Cleaning Capital of England due to the number of companies associated with the industry which are headquartered in the vicinity.
Its mission remains the promotion of the cleaning industry and its status through the medium of education. From a fragile start maintained by a small number of devoted men and women it has grown to be a strong voice in the cleaning education field.
The Institute does not train of itself but certificates training qualifications of which the Cleaning Operator Proficiency Certificate is the most well known and has produced thousands of qualified employees in a wide range of skills from simple dusting, mopping to more complicated correct machine operation technique.
The Institute licences a substantial number of training centres and will provide qualified Moderators who approve or otherwise the Assessors of work based training aimed at attaining Institute qualifications. There are also Regional Co-ordinators who support and check the Moderators work.
The Institute has a thriving membership who enjoy a wide range of benefits. There is regional and branch network which members are encouraged to join and take an active part. These concentrate on providing interesting and informative lectures as well as visits and social events.
The Institute communicates with the members with a monthly journal inside the pages of Cleaning %26 Hygiene Today and regular Newsletter both for home and an increasing overseas membership.
The Institute is run on democratic lines with a council consisting of up to 18 members 12 of which are elected from the individual membership and three from corporate members who serve for a three year term though they may be re elected at that time. The Institute can appoint up to three members who are generally chosen for particular skills for a term of one year only though the appointment may be extended. Council elects from its number a Chairperson and Vice Chair, who hold office for two years only. Dr. David Bellamy who gives his name to the Annual Schools Award aimed at instilling in children the importance of cleaning.
The Institute works closely with HM Government department and Bodies, other cleaning industry associations as well as Colleges, Independent Trainers and Schools.
