One of the oldest and smallest schools in Lancashire has won the national David Bellamy Award for Environmental Cleanliness 2007. Brabins Endowed Primary School beat over 350 entrants from around the UK by preparing an entry which emphasised looking after the school, village and surrounding countryside. The 8000 prize was presented by Professor Bellamy in a ceremony held at the school.

“We have to educate and encourage our children to want to learn about the and to keep their own home and school areas clean and tidy,” said Professor Bellamy. “The kids here are doing the right thing, looking after both the built and the animals outside.”

Schools taking part in the David Bellamy Award, sponsored by JohnsonDiversey and organised by The British Institute of Science, compile a charter of 20 activities which they pledge to undertake and document for

Brabins Endowed had already set up a special ‘Eco Committee’ for pupils to attend regularly and take part in activities. The children made promises about how they would look after the school and surrounding area and the committee made sure they kept them. Key Stage 2 pupils completed a Home with photographic evidence, tips and sheets completed by their parents. Pupils composed and performed songs such as ‘Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle’ and ‘’ to help them understand the subject. They also looked after the trees, and bog garden which surround the school playing field.

Founded in 1684, Brabins Endowed Primary School is located in the small village of Chipping, near Preston, overlooking the Ribble Valley. Just 55 children in Reception to Year 6 from four villages attend the school, which places a lot of emphasis on the local and has had Eco School status since 2000.

“We encourage the children to be responsible citizens and to make a sustainable in this area of outstanding natural beauty,” said Glynis Goldsbrough, Head Teacher at the school.

The school has an amazing record in the annual David Bellamy Awards having been runner-up twice before. With its prize money it plans to buy gardening equipment and some additional outdoor activity equipment to share with a neighbouring school. The Eco Committee also wants to buy a lightweight, high-speed floor cleaner to help keep the school even smarter.
