MLB home wins at 50-year high
posted by admin in home cleaning serviceIt always has been good to be home but not quite like this year. Credit better rest, a familiar routine, knowledge of a ballpark intricacies, a roster customized to maximize those intricacies, what have you. Simply, playing at home is an advantage.
Home teams in 2008, however, are winning 58.0 percent of their games, more three standard deviations from the mean. That is the biggest outlier seen in more than 50 years.
One reason for the increase might be that more teams are figuring out how the unique aspects of their home fields help or hurt hitters and pitchers. Then, general managers are molding rosters that can take advantage of the positives without losing much to the negatives.
A great example: Washington Nationals GM Jim Bowden realized that former outfielder Alfonso Soriano would not be hurt as much by the size of RFK Stadium because of his tendency to hit home runs down the line the shortest part of the park.
Another reason for this season’s high home winning percentage is that three teams Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are challenging for best home record in the past 50 years.
