Volunteers clean up Connecticut River
posted by admin in Gutter CleaningHundreds of volunteers are taking part in a massive clean-up along the Connecticut River today and descended on its banks in hopes of making a difference.
From source to sea, eco-friendly residents have one thing on their minds: keep the Connecticut River clean. For USDA Resource Conservationist, Seth Lerman, it’s a chance to teach his girls, Zoe and Emma, an important lesson.
“It’s part of my way of getting them to understand social responsibility and being part of the community and understanding that things that they do are part of that community and they have a relationship with not only the built environment, but also the natural environment,” said Seth Lerman.
After joining a dozen or so volunteers at Veteran’s Park in Middlefield and picking up plastic bottles, wrappers and even a TV, the message is hitting home.
“What you do to the earth affects everyone, so you really have to be careful of how you’re acting, what you’re doing to the streams and where you’re putting all your garbage and where it’s going to,” said 10-year old Zoe Lerman.
In its 11 year history, the clean up has attracted over 7,500 participants and they estimate that they’ve removed over 400 tons of trash from the Connecticut river basin.
“We have found that some site leaders have gone to the places where they cleaned up last year and didn’t see as much trash,” said Elisabeth Cianciola of the Connecticut Watershed Council. “So we’re hoping perhaps having this event is having an impact.”
“There’s the old saying: “think globally, act locally,” and I think when people start creating some understanding and an awareness of what their actions do, both positively and negatively, it’s an opportunity on the local level to build and make it a broader effort,” said Seth.
The Source to Sea cleanup is sponsored by the Connecticut Watershed Council and stretches from Old Lyme to the Canadian border.
