Neighbors help clean Easton home
posted by admin in Gutter CleaningVolunteers are helping to clean up an Easton home so their neighbor can stay on her property.
The town has said that Gladys Kronovitter, 76, of Easton can stay on the property as long as it’s cleaned up.
A dumpster full of junk, a couch that’s seen better days, and a trailer are not a sight you’d expect to see in a Fairfield County neighborhood, but it’s progress.
“This is tremendous, absolutely tremendous. I am dumbfounded,” says Gladys Kronovitter, 76, of Easton.
Neighbors and perfect strangers are rallying around Kronovitter and helping her clean up her property at 52 Flat Rock Road so she doesn’t get kicked out. Kronovitter has been living on the property for 62 years.
“Being in Fairfield County, you don’t think situations like these exist,” says Father Peter Cipriani of Notre Dame High School in Fairfield. Notre Dame High School brought a group of students down to the home to help out.
A judge ordered Kronovitter off the property citing health concerns, like the pile of human waste dumped in a compost heap. That has since been cleaned up to health department standards. There is still no septic, no running water, and a condemned house to deal with, not to mention the 60 cats taken off the property.
“We actually have an Appalachian club at the high school. Each year we take a group of 35 kids and we have to deal with situations like this,” says Father Peter.
Those helping in the clean up are helping to buy Gladys more time, but some question why she would want to stay.
“This is my home since 1945. I lived here all this time. I love this place. My father planted the tall evergreen trees himself,” says Kronovitter. “This is my blood.”
Although neighbors have improved the condition of the property they say they still need more help cleaning it up.
There will be a planning and zoning meeting tomorrow to see about getting Kronovitter a new trailer and running water. The committee will also discuss demolishing the home, which is caving in on itself.
