The Anywhere Chair Routine
An excellent alternative workout especially when:
” Holiday travel prevents you from getting to the gym
” Last minute holiday shopping invades on your time at the gym
” The gym is packed in January and you can’t get to a machine
The routine consist of five exercises that can be done anywhere, anytime and at fitness level. With a sturdy chair and 6 feet of space, the routine provides an effective full body workout, working all major muscle groups. Each exercise can be modified to accommodate the beginner to the advance. The five exercises included in the routine are:
1. Squats
2. Dips
3. Pushups
4. Chair Tucks
5. Lunges

Mubarakah Ibrahim is on the front line battling fitness neglect so prevalent in the lifestyles of women. Mubarakah, an orthodox African American Sunni Muslim from birth, dons a Hijab, a loose fit, knee length long sleeve tunic and pants while gently pushing clients to “make it effortful”. Known as the “Muslim Trainer” who “kicks butts with a smile”, Mubarakah the owner of BALANCE Fitness Studio for Women and the author of the 10 Commandants of Fat Loss, is committed to helping women find their path to fitness and to stay the course.
Mubarakah’s journey to the status of fitness phenom began with her first pregnancy. Saddled with 95 pounds after the birth of her son, Mubarakah embarked on a mission to shed the weight in a healthy manner. Her extremely successful weight loss effort gained her rapt attention from the female Muslim community who asked her for assistance. Through that assistance, came the suggestion that she should become a personal trainer.
With her AFAA Personal Trainer certificate in hand, Mubarakah went into the homes of Muslim and non Muslim women to help them achieve fitness and push them to the next next fitness level. Always looking for innovative ways to challenge her clients, she offered them Fitness Boot Camp for the firs time in April 2004 when the sun began to rising at 5:30 a.m. Mubarakah offered her first Outdoor Fitness Boot Camps at New Haven Bowen Field. When women from all walks of life run bleachers an to get into shape. In March 2006, after many years of planning, she became the proud owner of BALANCE Fitness Studio, located in in the Beaver Hill section of New Haven. The 1,300 square foot facility equipped with tangerine, lime and lemon colored weights, balls jump ropes, and bands is New Haven’s only all women personal training and group fitness studio. Besides offering Personal Training and Fitness Boot Camp the studio offers group exercise classes like Yoga for “Every” Body, Tone n’ Sculpt, Belly Dancing, Pure Fat Burn “Bootilicious” Burn, Pilates Body Conditioning and Hip Hop Abs Fusion. These classes helped BALANCE Fitness Studio landed a coveted spot on the 2007 New Haven Advocate best in New Haven list.
Mubaraka is a health and fitness maverick. This summer she conceived, organized and hosted the The Fit Muslimah Health and Fitness Summit, designed to inspire and motivate Muslim women and girls known as Muslimah to get excited and serious about health and fitness. The ground-breaking two day health and fitness summit, the only fitness summit in North American exclusively for Muslim women, was held July 28 and 29th at Career High School in New Haven, Connecticut. She also spearheaded the Beaver Hill Wellness Fair, sponsored by the business owners in the Edge of the Woods Plaza, to celebrate the Beaver Hill community and bring positive attention to the neighborhood. The Wellness Festival, held on Sunday, September 30, 2007 from was a fun-filled afternoon for the entire family that celebrated cultural diversity and promoted health, wellness and a positive community image. As Edge of the Woods and Shang Hai Chinese Restaurant provided free food samples; BALANCE Fitness Studio for women conduct outdoor fitness classes including belly dancing and Hip Hop Aerobics while Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, Sylvan Cleaners and Custom Tees hosted activities for the little ones.
Mubarakah Ibrahim is on fire for fitness and igniting a “Fitness Revolution” Since receiving her AFAA personal training certificate, she has evolved into a fitness and nutrition expert and a dynamic lecturer. She lives in the Beaver Hill Section of New Haven, with her husband a New Haven police officer and their three sons.
