Ticha Penicheiro spent two days suffering as the Monarchs prepped for the Detroit Shock.

The Shock had two three point attempts in the final 10 seconds, but both failed as Sacramento (12-11) retained a lead it held virtually the whole game.

Penicheiro’s performance was only a part of a winning formula.

“We weren’t thinking about their record, but it feels great to be the first team to beat them here this season,” Brunson said.

Following the game, Monarchs coach Jenny Boucek was most proud of her team’s fight.

“Mental toughness,” she said. “To beat a team like this at home, who hasn’t lost all year, first you have to believe you can do it and then you have to put the work behind the belief.

“One of the most powerful things about this team is it is a true team, something you don’t see on the professional level,” Boucek said. “They want to play for each other. They enjoy this season, enjoying each other and play for one another.”

Considering the Shock (16-8) won by 14 when the teams played June 6 in Sacramento, something shifted dramatically.

“They made shots,” Nolan said of the Monarchs’ 54.5 percent first-half shooting and 50 percent for the game. “They played as good as they could tonight because they made shots, especially by bench players.”

From there it was just a matter of holding on.

While that’s what Penicheiro said she was doing, it didn’t look like that from the other side of the court.

“Ticha normally doesn’t shoot or make threes and tonight she was hitting,” said Nolan, who missed a three in the final seconds. “That’s the kind of night it was for them.”

Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said detectives met with 7-year-old Kiana Reece Raiford and her mother on Monday.

“He has the utmost respect for his dad,” Raiford said. “I’m happy Kiana is safe and this is all over.”

Raiford said he wasn’t happy, however, with what he felt was a lagging response Sunday by the Seattle Police Department. He instead gave praise to the Renton and Kent police departments, where Raiford said officers had better communication.

Without evidence of a crime, police can’t get a search warrant that would give them phone records. Phone companies may require a statement from police that the phone owner may be in danger.

Lott has a criminal history; he was arrested in January for second-degree robbery, family said. Raiford, his brother and the missing girl’s father, said Sunday night he was sure Lott wouldn’t put her in a dangerous situation.

Sometimes an autograph has nothing to do with an autograph. Josh Hamilton learned that early on.

“They want to tell me their story,” the Texas Rangers slugger said. “It’ll be about their son or father, about their best friend.”

They want him to know that his fight has helped their fight.

“I’ve walked away with tears in my eyes,” Hamilton said. “At first, you have trouble believing you’ve helped the way they say you have.”

He has heard it enough times to know that others are out there dealing with the same demons. He hears it when people approach him, reads it in hundreds of letters.

No way Hamilton should be playing in the 79th All-Star Game tonight at Yankee Stadium. Three years ago, his baseball career seemed over. His body was broken, his marriage shattered.

“I was blessed with so much talent,” he said, “and I was wasting it by using drugs and alcohol.”

When Hamilton was at his lowest, his days were simple. He was on a drug or alcohol binge, or he was sleeping one off.

On Friday, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took over IndyMac, the Pasadena, Calif., company that ran out of funding to sustain its large mortgage business. Of its $31 billion of liabilities, about a third were loans from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and $19 billion were deposits an unusually low percentage of deposit funding for a bank or thrift.

The loans from the Federal Home Loan Bank were secured by mortgages, assets now seized by the FDIC. But Home Loan Banks have a statutory right to be first to get their hands on the collateral, and observers said the FDIC is likely to keep or pay down the loans rather than hand over mortgages, which means the Home Loan Bank of San Francisco will feel little of IndyMac’s failure.

There might be some fallout from IndyMac, though. Cannon said that the FDIC, to make up for some of the losses from the IndyMac failure, might have to eventually increase deposit insurance fees. That would hurt bank profits, though not dramatically.

In most markets, home buyers have the upper hand these days. That often means they have greater negotiating power when it comes to price or the ability to squeeze out extra perks from sellers.

But on occasion, they will ask a seller for even more, a request that will help get to know the home better. They will ask to sleep over.

As reality programs such as TLC’s “Date My House” and HGTV’s “Sleep On It” show buyers spending a considerable amount of time and sometimes an entire night in homes they are considering, some buyers in the real world are getting the chance to do the same.

It isn’t something being agreed to by droves of sellers, but it is a new tactic that some are considering, said Pat Skiffington of Keller Williams Classic Realty in Orlando, Fla. He is arranging for a prospective buyer to stay overnight in a downtown Orlando condo.

Mr. Skiffington wouldn’t recommend it for every home. The Orlando condo is a good candidate because the prospective buyers don’t live in the area, and experiencing what the downtown is like at night might sway them to make an offer, he said.

Any seller who attempts this also should consider that while letting someone stay in your home can spotlight the positives, “it can also punctuate the negatives,” he said. Plus, even if the buyers decide they love the home after staying there, it might not be enough.

Just ask Jeri Moran, a real-estate broker who had people stay over in her second home in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. The buyers love the home, but haven’t made an offer.

Even if setting up an extended showing isn’t doable, home sellers can take away some tips from shows like “Date My House,” said the host, Bob Guiney. “It’s such a huge thing to be able to hang out in a house,” he said. But, he added, it is most important to “think about selling your house like thinking about going on a first date.”

In one episode, the best feature was the outdoor space, said Mr. Guiney. By playing up that property’s barbecue and pool area in the backyard and allowing the buyers to experience it they got a sense of what it would be like to live there.

From the buyer’s perspective, there are other opportunities to spend more time in the home than doing it in one large chunk. Mr. Skiffington said that nowadays buyers are averaging between three and four showings of a home even before an offer is submitted.

Buyers can visit the home at different times of day to get a sense of neighborhood noise, said Elizabeth Blakeslee of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Washington. She recommends talking to the neighbors.

Those who are interested in having a buyer stay in their home overnight should think about the possible consequences, said Ms. Blakeslee.

Nathan Mann beat Rashmi Badiani, 56, to death and then smothered Radhaben Chauhan, 72, with her bedclothes after climbing through their window.

Both women, who were friends and shared a room, were bed bound and helpless.

Det Insp Mark Harrison, of Leicestershire police, who led the investigation, said Mann had always refused to discuss what happened that night other than admitting breaking into Hayes Park Nursing Home, Leicester, with the intention of stealing something.

“He has taken the smile from our faces and made our lives a misery. We have lost a dear and loved member of our family, and that pain will never go away.”

“She was recovering from a stroke and looking forward to her grandson’s wedding. She was loved by all her family and always had a smile on her face.

“Mann took away from us one very precious person who can never be replaced. We will never forgive him - and he must pay for his crime.”

The nursing home, in the Rowlatts Hill area of Leicester, offers accommodation for around 50 residents.

It caters for the elderly, people with learning and physical disabilities, people with dementia and people suffering from mental disorders.

Police said that, although Mann was able to enter through an insecure window, they were satisfied the home met “standard safety requirements”.

Ageing Minister Justine Elliot today said the Government would review accreditation standards, saying the current infection control standard was very broad.

Ms Elliot said the new standards would cover in more detail how homes can reduce the likelihood of outbreaks of infection through good handwashing practices, safe disposal of bodily waste and proper use of gowns, gloves and masks.

New standards would also ensure proper hydration and isolation of sick residents, she said.

There have been 671 gastro outbreaks reported nationally since the beginning of the year, with 383 of those in nursing homes.

Ms Elliot said her primary concern was the welfare and care of residents.

“Infection control in nursing homes is a big task when one considers that residents are often frail, aged and vulnerable to infection,” she said.

“We can never wipe out infectious diseases but we must always look at ways to minimise risk.”

Ms Elliot also announced the Department of Health and Ageing was working on new national guidelines to prevent and manage norovirus, a common and highly infectious cause of gastroenteritis in nursing homes.
