Nelson said she gave the men $100 cash as a deposit and asked the balance be put on her credit card. She was soon informed by the workers that stronger and more expensive solutions were needed to treat her carpets.

Since then, Nelson’s Daughter, Joan Cerny has made countless phone calls to the District Attorney’s office, the Better Bureau and the Sheriff’s Office to see what options they may have in getting the word out about what happened.

Cerny did some Internet research on the based and unearthed an abundance of consumer complaints-detailing shoddy service, misrepresentation and exorbitant overcharging.

Willis said the type of criminals involved in such ripoffs usually move quickly on to the next swindle after one is done. Lorraine Nelson realizes the $856 is a loss, but hopes telling her story will prevent other seniors from falling prey to similar scams.

The FBI Website says senior citizens are targeted for such fraud because they are most likely to have a “nest egg’ of available money, they tend to be trusting, they don’t know who to report the crime to, and when they do report it, they often turn out to be poor witnesses.
