Facing financial threats from the federal , regional officials said they have a plan to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s stringent air cleanup order and at the same time avoid crippling sanctions.

The plan calls for 53 strategies for fighting dust, including increased dust inspections at sites and crackdowns on off-road vehicle use.

The goal is to reduce the more than 96,000 tons of dust that Maricopa County will put out in 2007 to about 81,000 tons in 2010.

If Maricopa County fails to keep the dust down, air pollution sanctions could cost the region up to $7.8 billion in lost federal transportation money.

The plan is expected to be presented Wednesday during a public hearing conducted by the Maricopa Association of Governments.
